Had this on the first sunny day in May 2007, in Bloomsbury Square, to celebrate a work birthday. A couple of weeks earlier we’d done something similar for a Friday evening, and had tested Louis Roederer brut NV and Pol Roger’s NV demi-sec (better!), from Planet of the Grapes’ range. But for me, it was this NV Deutz that merited inclusion! A nice, quite elegant brut, but not too dry, and with at least a medium body. Mid-green-gold. Medium-to-fine, fairly persistent bead. Mixed nose, but I think more Chardonnay in the blend – some toasty, biscuit aromas around a touch of apricot and above all almond notes. On the palate, the dosage is enough to bring alive the fruitiness – apricot & possibly mandarin? – that makes the palate… well… fun. Nice drinking.
