In a fortuitous meeting at the Yalumba Cellar Door, Jane Ferrari set up a 6am vineyard tour & tasting, including Pewsey Vale Rieslings, that culminated in a terroir taste-off at 8.30am, between this and its partner from 1km up the road – the 2008 Single Site Grenache. The Single Site was notably more perfumed, with lighter red fruit. This was more brooding, muted and masculine. Remarkably youthful colour for a 6 year old Grenache – mid ruby-garnet. Jane ordered me to take both home as they’d develop. Indeed. This broadened and took on more mature meatiness and complexity. Restrained dusty spice, oak touches, meat hints and darker cherry fruit. Raspberry, smoke, oak spice and herbal notes. Power and flavour density. Pretty long and ripe structure. Balanced. Great way to start & end my final day of visits & tastings!
