First wine of Booker 2013, and Anne-Marie, Alex and Flo sat down for an early lunch on Friday. Just into maturity this one, and should have another decade ahead at least. A very nice, decidedly drinkable food wine. Mid to deep garnet cove, with a narrow rose rim. Quite intense beefy, meaty nose on decanting, then an oak-led, cedar vanilla and oak-spice nose, over blackcurrant, and a black pepper and smoky mineral tone too. Medium+ body and acidity too, which lightens the body. Medium+ alcohol, but high, slightly grainy tannins – from the Sangiovese perhaps? Savoury cedar and blackcurrant flavours, with a medium+ length, smoky finish. Tannin, acidity and flavour intensity say this is built to last.
