Another rare varietal Rioja from Ijalba, and apparently there’s only a couple of Ha of this red variety left. Overall, I think Ijalba need to work out how best to vinify Maturana Tinta, because this was interesting, unusual, but ultimately disjointed. Deep ruby. Orange or Angostura bitters is the dominant aromatic, alongside some toasty, smoky oak – coconut notes suggest American. Maybe some redcurrant? Medium+ acidity, medium body, and ripe, medium tannins give structure, but probably too harsh acidity for the depth of red cherry and orange peel flavours. Medium length.
