A very kind birthday present from Blue Rubicon, and my first experience of GPL. Not bad for the vintage. Particularly noteworthy were a distinctive, Barolo-like rose-petal aromatic note, as well as a touch too much oak for the palate density. Medium garnet, with a medium, watery rim. That rose-petal note immediately became noticeable, but also persisted. Underneath, some cedar, gravely minerality with perhaps coal-smoke? A capsicum-like green hint. Some red fruit in the background. Medium-bodied with medium acidity, slightly grainy, medium tannins – a little rough, but maturing OK. Very savoury flavour of smoky, gravelly minerality, with some crisp red fruit underneath. Medium+ length.
