Picked this up at Budapest Airport after my first visit to Hungary (DUB -> BUD -> DUB) along with a couple more bottles of good Tokaji. Egri Bikavér is Hungary’s other famous wine – “Bull’s Blood” from Eger. This was a very pleasant surprise, that I guess reflects the substantial investment in Hungarian wine-making. Medium-deep ruby-black core with a ruby rim. Intense bouquet initially of eucalyptus, developing into a warm, spicy cocoa nose with layers of liquorice (?) and plummy fruit. Medium-to-full body, with a touch of tannic grip, notable (balanced) acidity and a pleasant red-fruit palate. Quite long. Enjoyable.
