This is the most Northern Rhône-like Syrah that is nevertheless definitively of its own place, and not from the Rhône. Grown from a selection of clones from La Chapelle in 1996, this has the colour, flavour profile and relatively lighter body of cool climate Syrah, but with the softness and fruit purity of New Zealand. Medium ruby-garnet – still more ‘purple’ than 4 years would suggest. Deep, dark blueberry fruit, some white pepper and violet touches, then opens up into classic black olive aromatics, with pain grille and vanilla from the new oak. Sweet raspberry and black cherry fruit, velvety tannins, toasty cinnamon oak, and some gravelly minerality. Rich. Long.
