So, finally, via Mr Ward’s inside track, I got hold of some 2003 Blanc de Blancs. And not only that, but in the spangly new Nyetimber packaging, imminently being released! Overall, a pretty nice wine, showing again the potential of 2003 in UK – just as the 2003 Classic was. However, the current winemaker thinks that the BdB had too much malo-lactic done on it (by the prior winemaker). This does indeed show through as a noticeable buttery note on the nose, and a softer, creamier palate. This probably does detract, but by no means ruins this. Mid-gold colour and fine bead. Ripe pear and sweet apple, with that butter note and some toast hints. Quite ripe palate – probably more natural, ‘fruit’ ripeness and softer acidity of 2003 than purely dosage. Medium+ length at most – could do with a bit more.
