My first wine from Waiheke Island, north of Auckland. An interesting balance between Old and New Worlds: certainly a core of quite ripe black fruit, but with savoury overtones – cigar box and smoky hints – and a mere 12.5% ABV. Likewise, some ripe but notable tannin and acidity that keeps this quite light and fresh. The lighter touch of Bordeaux, but with a more approachable flavour and structure. Enjoyed this with slow-cooked Kudu, for Sunday Lunch, before pub-quiz writing with Whippet.
