Well, the first time we went to the Maidenhead Italian, I got chatting to the owner, and he showed us this. Since then I knew we’d have to try it, so Katy’s last night in Maidenhead made sense! Overall, expensive for what it is, but excellent, and needed to be done! Quite deep colour for a Nebbiolo (illicit colour blenders?): mid-depth garnet, with a bricking rim, but only medium width. Complex nose, but led by oak-derived notes: demerara sugar, sweet spice and some tarry hints. Savoury. Lacking the rose petal aromatics, however (Gaja oaky style?). Firm, but silky tannins with excellently balanced acidity, presence and body, plus concentrated, smoky cherry and sweet spice flavours. Great length. Fantastic with steak, and one to savour ‘standalone’.
