Wine of the night at my birthday, and although drinking well now, it’s still fairly youthful (for an “early drinking” vintage like 1997!). Picked this up at Planet of the Grapes’ clearance of someone’s cellar and thought I’d see what the fuss was about in terms of LLC and its increasingly stratospheric prices. Wasn’t disappointed. Powerful. Black core with a still-youthful purple-garnet core. Complex nose. Intense and very, very interesting! Buttered toast (!) around cedar-wood, meaty, roast lamb notes, and a core of dark fruit. Savoury nose. Concentrated, smoky fruit – dark fruit flavour profile, with good length. I reckon this would be perfect in another 5 years. A roast-lamb wine, even if we did serve it with pork belly!
