So this one’s way out there… Picked up a half-case of this going cheap from Majestic online, because I knew that my brother and his girlfriend would soon be moving house and having a house-warming, and I knew she liked Belle Epoque. Little did I know that I’d be toasting their marriage with them two weeks later, on 21st August 2006! My brother gave me all of 36 hours notice that they were going to get married, and parents only at the ceremony! Overall a pretty good celebrator, but I’ve a suspicion I’d like Taittinger NV as much for elegance. Pale yellow-gold with green glints. Fine mousse, and a fine, persistent bead. Moderately intense nose with ‘light fruit notes’ – white peach? – over buttered toastiness that became pronounced with aeration. Pleasant, elegant palate of lemony citrus, with notable but not searing acidity. Further toasty flavours on the finish. No label, of course!!
