My parents randomly had a bottle of the 1998 vintage of the Montirius Gigondas, so we did a “vertical” test against the 2000 (see several pages before). Very interesting. The 1998 is a very pleasant wine and definitely better matured. The 2000 perhaps has more potential? ’98 deep red with hints of brick, whilst neutral in the ’00. ’98 with pronounced strawberry and cranberry aromas, bearing rich flavours and above all gentler tannin. The ’00 has darker, smokier fruit with clearer tannin and will certainly improve with time. I wonder whether it will outdo the ’98. I have 1 bottle to find out…
