Picked-up on sale from Majestic, whilst picking up another half-dozen Viña Ardanza 2001 Rioja. Thought I’d give a top South African producer the chance to shine with their ‘icon’ wine. Overall not bad, but maybe needs a couple of years. Could do with being slightly less jammy. Deep black-ruby, with a narrow rim. Wood-smoke, earth, fresh tobacco, hints of dark chocolate, with slightly jammy blackcurrant and damson fruit. On the palate, coal smoke, gravelly minerality, sweet fruit on the mid-palate, then a slightly disjointed smoky, bitter finish. Medium acidity, medium+ tannin – but ripe. Medium+ length. Quite creamy texture.
