Possibly opened a little young, or a little cool, because though pleasant, it was not as satisfying or complex as expected. Mid-depth ruby colour. Aromas of some strawberry and spice, but most memorably a very peppery-spiced finish, with some red-chilli character. Good length. I hope more interest will show in the second bottle, served a bit warmer.
[2nd bottle in 2011: peppery tannic structure still evident, and fragrant strawberry fruit, albeit showing the alcohol. But with Malaysian fish curry it came into its own – matching the chilli. Else a fairly standard Châteauneuf. Interesting.]
