I’d been meaning to try Murrieta’s top wine, so when I saw this late bottled 1978 (216 months in barrel!!) on sale in Majestic Vinopolis I had to give it a go. Drank with Jack and Rob on a Monday night, and what a pleasure. Vivacity of colour and flavour! Mid-weight garnet core with a broad brick rim. Moderate nose – initially slight varnish astringency then vanilla over gentle caramel-smoke toast and warm spice. But the palate – so alive, and juicy – like popping individual berry nodules on a blackberry. Toasty length. Really easy drinking, with little tannin. Just sooooo harmonious!! A lovely, elegant wine.
