I’d heard good things about the Morellino DOC, so when I spotted one in the Italian local to Chemistry, I thought I’d give it a lash. At a restaurant price of £24, this was pretty good value all-in-all: a well made wine, from what was a good vintage generally in the region. Overall it was slightly different than expected, being not only in the dark fruit spectrum, but also being dominated aromatically by new oak notes. In fact, it was slightly unbalanced towards toasty, cocoa-powder notes. However, with decent concentration, well-managed tannins, and pretty good length, it did well against the February cold-snap!
