Perplexing one this – and ultimately a touch frustrating. With an intense, complex nose and good concentration, my initial reaction was positive, but slightly ‘rough’ tannin made it less pleasurable to drink than to taste. So much so, that when I left it open by accident and lost half the bottle, I wasn’t too fussed! Maybe it needed a few more years in bottle? Deep garnet core and a narrow brick rim. Intense nose with subtly blended oak and fresh leather around a rich core of blackcurrant fruit. Some rose hints, oddly. Good concentration of black fruit with a toasty, woody, long finish. Just the tannins were too coarse and too intense to leave it enjoyable. Oh, and out of order too – should switch with the Jaboulet Châteauneuf…
