Joseph Drouhin Moulin-a-Vent 2003

€12; 13%

The staff discount at the James’s Gate Bottle Shop, coupled with this being bought on product allowance made this value-for-money, otherwise it would have been expensive – retails for €19 apparently! Light depth of colour, with a garnet core, fading to a ruby rim. Strawberry-jam sweetness and vanilla-cream, with background smoky / wet-slate notes and some chocolate hints. Medium-bodied, with low tannin and fresh acidity, but with good fruit intensity and distinct pepperiness. Nice. Best Fleurie I’ve tasted, from the 2003 heatwave (I guess that’s what gives the intensity). Not as good as a quality Moulin-à-Vent or Morgon, due to less intensity. But good.
