[Faint signature: António Agrellos]
My first Nacional, courtesy of an MW student trip to the Douro. The range-tasting at Noval was very special, with both the 40 year old Tawny and this Nacional showing their qualities. Nacional 2000 also pretty good as was the 60s Colheita after dinner. It was great to speak to Antonio Agrellos, the winemaker too. Deep ruby-purple, not black. Savoury aromatic attack: Marmite and soy hints, very smoky mineral, garrigue and blackberry beneath. On the palate, the fruit shines: elegantly structured blue and blackberry, with soy touches to the smoky minerality. Fresh, very fine, fairly firm tannins show this still needs time to unwind. Long.
