The New World Chardonnay counterpart to a 2005 Chablis in the Optimor 2nd case. Overall, a quality effort – refreshing, not overripe / blowy – if a little simple. Pale-to-medium depth yellow-gold, with a watery rim. Initially, intense barrel-ferment notes: corn-on-the-cob and buttered toast. Caramel and perhaps butterscotch emerge. Very little fruit character until a couple of days had passed, when ?peach? notes joined toffee shortbread (!) aromas. Moderate acidity, with pear and melon juice flavours. Toasty, and slight ‘gunflint’ overtones on the finish. A bit short.
