A bottle that Dad had picked up somewhere, and that we drank with pan-fried duck. Pretty good overall, if a little alcoholically overripe (albeit ‘only’ 14%…). Deep ruby-garnet core with a brick rim. Initially beefy on the nose, with some leather notes. Opened-out to very sweet fruit – blackcurrant jam and strawberry – with overtones of liqueurs: crème de cassis and kirsch (finally, clearly, picked up what RP and others go on about!). Notes of subtle cocoa and cinnamon with vanilla. Subtle tannins and low-ish acidity with moderately intense, sweet fruit. Medium length overall with a toasty finish. Enveloped in a spicy, warm, alcohol-driven palate.
