To continue my 39th general celebrations, I opened this before a now-traditional bottle of Rieussec 1975 (which showed the best so far). While enjoyed the first glass of this classic, mature Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, I read the informative back-label. By chance, the vines of the Menzies vineyard were planted in 1975! Deep garnet with a medium-depth rim. Subtle ‘velvety’ textured aromatics: cigar box, ‘dusty’ chilli spice, some fresh leather. Plum and blackberry fruit emerges and sweetens. Then a lifted aromatic note – eucalyptus – comes out. Velvety, medium-full bodied, with fine, ripe, moderate, matured tannins. Rich, but with a savoury edge, and refreshing acidity at the core. Spicy, mulberry fruit. A touch hot on the finish, but finely crafted.
